About EUMETSAT – Trusted in Space. Essential on Earth.
Since 1986, EUMETSAT, Europe’s meteorological satellite agency, has monitored weather and climate from space. From its headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany, it operates fleets of satellites observing the Earth system and delivers real-time, 24/7 data and imagery to its 30 member states to help protect communities and support critical sectors of their economies.
As it marks its 40th anniversary in 2026, EUMETSAT looks back on four decades of achievements in Earth observation for weather and climate. Today, it plays a central role in the international meteorological satellite system, contributing observations that support forecasting and climate monitoring in its member states and beyond.
Four Meteosat satellites in geostationary orbit deliver continuous observations of fast developing weather events over Europe, Africa and the Indian Ocean. Two polar-orbiting Metop satellites provide data critical for forecasts up to 10 days ahead.
EUMETSAT also supports European policies aimed at strengthening Europe’s sovereignty. It operates and disseminates data under the Copernicus programme and leads the development and management of the data lake for the Destination Earth initiative.
EUMETSAT’s 30 member states are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye and the United Kingdom.

UCLouvain

The Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) is very active in space-related research. UCLouvain contributes to large-scale international projects in the field of space and collaborates closely with partners whose expertise in this field is well established. The space domain at UCLouvain is essentially transversal. It concerns almost all research institutes of the science and technology sector (among the various topics : telecommunications, instrumental design, cosmology, aeronautics, planetology, astrophysics,...) but also some institutes from health science and humanities sectors. UCLouvain has set up an internal network bringing together the active forces in the space field and called "Louvain4Space".
